Earn and Learn Program

What is Earn & Learn?
For high school juniors or seniors, the Earn & Learn program is a unique opportunity to earn three college credits this winter and spring, and learn how–as a peer educator–to present drug-free messages to children in elementary school. The classes are held on Alvernia’s campus. For a schedule of upcoming courses, email or call the Earn & Learn Coordinator at 610-376-8669.

Why juniors and seniors?
1. The peer influence of high school students as role models is powerful. We ‘channel’ this influence in a positive manner to teach drug prevention to elementary students.
2. Peer education–students teaching students–is more effective, and lasts longer for all involved.
3. High school juniors and seniors can develop life skills, learn more about potential teaching/leadership careers, participate in a college-level class, and contribute a valuable community service.
4. Parents: Your son or daughter will experience the expectations and requirements of college course work at no credit cost to you.

Who is eligible?
You are, if you
1. Are a high school junior or senior by October 1st.
2. Have a minimum grade point average of 3.2
3. Are active in high school clubs/programs
4. Are recommended by two teachers
5. State your commitment to be drug–and alcohol–free.

How do I apply?
Apply for this program by completing the downloadable application, and mailing it with the required information to the Council on Chemical Abuse. If you feel you are eligible, we encourage you to apply. Please remember that you will need a recommendation from two of your high school teachers.

Are there any costs?
This course is offered at no cost. However, students will be required to buy the course textbook. Finally, students will be required to provide a $100 deposit, which will be fully reimbursed upon satisfactory completion of the course.

What kind of credits are these?
Students earn three actual college credits through Alvernia University. You can transfer them to any college you attend, including Alvernia University.

Why Earn & Learn?
This innovative program began in 1998 with an agreement between the Council on Chemical Abuse and Alvernia University. Earn & Learn was developed to create effective drug and alcohol prevention education and training opportunities, and offer high school students a chance to earn three college credits at no cost.
