What is Prevention?
In its simplest terms, prevention is educating individuals about the dangers of chemical use and taking the proper safe guards to minimize the harmful consequences of such use.

Berks Counseling Center provides prevention and intervention services for youth and families with specialized community and school-based services for women with children and pregnant and parenting teens. BCC also provides Student Assistance services at Reading High School.

Berks Parents Services Collaborative (BPSC) is a maternal addictions program for Berks County women .The goal of the program is to reduce the number of infants born exposed to alcohol and other drugs by providing prevention services and intensive case management services to high risk mothers.

BerksTALKLINE, a countywide listening service for individuals, utilizes adult phone line workers who are fully trained to respond to problems and concerns of people in Berks County. Under the supervision of staff, telephone workers provide information, supportive listening and referrals to community agencies.

Berks Women in Crisis offers supportive services to victims and eliminate domestic and sexual violence in Berks County. Prevention and intervention services for victims of domestic violence include alcohol and other drug education for shelter residents and referrals for treatment. PeaceWorks, the prevention component of Berks Women in Crisis provides educational presentations to schools, colleges, child care centers, churches, social organizations, service agencies, businesses, government employees or any entity who requests a program.

C.A.R.E.(Community Alliance and Reinvestment Endeavor) is a community-based organization serving the families of Northwest Reading. Prevention services offered by C.A.R.E. include Youth Ending Substance Abuse (Y.E.S.), a drug and alcohol education program for youth. The program includes prevention education, cessation assistance, conflict resolution tips, drug-free recreational activities, youth assessment development and leadership skills.

The Community Prevention Partnership of Berks County offers a variety of prevention services to the Berks County community that help to address problems and risks associated with: alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; violence; teen pregnancy; abuse; crime; school dropout; and other related social issues. The Partnership mobilizes communities, providing them with education, technical assistance, and resources.

The Olivets Boys and Girl Club provides diversified activities that meet the interests of all young people at its club locations throughout Berks County. Core programs encourage activities with adults, peers, and family members that enable kids to enhance their self-esteem and fulfill their potential. Based on the physical, emotional, cultural and social needs and interests of boys and girls, and recognizing developmental principles, the Club’s programs fall into five areas: Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; Health and Life Skills; The Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation.
