Red Ribbon Week

History of Red Ribbon Week

The annual Red Ribbon Week campaign is held to honor the mission of fallen DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Kiki was slain by drug dealers while working undercover in Mexico. Following his death, Kiki’s friends and family began wearing red ribbons to honor his efforts to eliminate drugs from our society. The first nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign was in 1988. Every year since, millions of U.S. children celebrate Red Ribbon Week to take a stand against illegal drugs.

Red Ribbon Week 2009

2009 Red Ribbon Week was sponsored in Berks County, PA, by the Council on Chemical Abuse. This year's theme was "Have the Courage to be Drug Free."
