What is Treatment Court?

In Berks County there are 4 specialized treatment courts:

  • DUI (Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol) Court
  • Drug Court
  • Mental Health Court
  • Veterans Court

While all of the treatment courts have distinct differences due to the clients that they serve, all of the courts are equipped to address the offenders’ drug and/or alcohol programs. “COCA is a collaborative partner, in helping those individuals set goals and achieve long-term recovery. COCA provides funding to aid individuals in finding appropriate drug and alcohol treatment as needed,” Yvonne, COCA Representative for Treatment Court.

On Monday, May 21, 2018, DUI Treatment Court Judge the Honorable Eleni Demetriou Geisshauer, and Drug Treatment Court Judge, the Honorable Theresa Johnson joined us on our WEEU Show to discuss this service program. The treatment court system in Berks is working hard to bring individuals from broken and difficult pasts, including drug and alcohol abuse and incarceration, into a new life full of hope and active recovery.

Participants in Drug and DUI treatment court, appear in court every other week, meet with a probation officer weekly, and participate in recovery-related activities. Involvement in treatment court is generally 18 months and includes completing the four phases of the program.
